Crypto or not, the legal question comes down to who may take a bet from someone in New Zealand. The answer is short, and this section gives it.

Under section 74AAA of the Racing Industry Act 2020, nobody besides TAB NZ may put racing or sports wagers before a person in New Zealand; the prohibition has applied since 28 June 2025. Betcha and TAB are two brands of that one operator, not competitors. A licence cannot be applied for, and a register of bookmakers does not exist.

An overseas company offering these bets is, DIA says, breaking the law; an individual, by contrast, may not be convicted over a bet placed offshore. The minimum age for betting with TAB NZ is 18.
